Gian and Giachen are Graubünden’s most famous ibexes. Graubünden Ferien and WIRZ Communication wanted to develop a digital extension of the children’s book version that works on any device without needing to be downloaded from app stores.

Scan a page, start the animation
We developed a Progressive Web App that uses AI to recognise printed book pages and directs the user straight to the corresponding animated scene. Of course, we also considered simply using a QR code for this. But on the one hand, the books had already been printed, and on the other, the AI effect (we’re talking about 2019!) was just so cool!
Panorama, Parallax and Audio
Behind every scene lies an animated mountain panorama featuring camera movement control, dolly zoom, parallax effects, interactive sprites and a bespoke TypeScript framework for synchronising audio and animation. Too many technical terms? The best thing to do is just give it a go!
Software beyond code
The project won bronze at the Best of Swiss Web Awards 2020 in the Technology category; it was built using React, TypeScript, Python and TensorFlow. The limitations of the iOS PWA were fully resolved from a technical perspective, without having to resort to a native app.
